David Louis Fierman and RJ Supa are pleased to present His and Hers: Benjamin Fredrickson and Lucas Michael, the inaugural exhibition at Our House, the project space located within the curators' apartment. The show features Fredrickson's Polaroids of men in various stages of intimacy, undress, and sexual explicitness juxtaposed against Michael's stark pencil drawings comprising an unconventional portrait of the artist - as seen through the filter of the lore surrounding Sylvia Plath.
Benjamin
Fredrickson photographs men in various sexual situations. Sometimes
posed and formal, sometimes extreme in their sexual frankness, the
photographs serve as a both a visual diary and a cohesive body of work
depicting the frailty and violence inherent in male sexuality.
Lucas
Michael's ongoing series of drawings of book covers inscribed by the
artist in this case focus exclusively on the troubled and romanticized
life of Sylvia Plath. By inscribing the drawings as if he were the
author, Michael inserts himself into the narrative surrounding Plath's
life in particular and the pervasive interest in the sexual and personal
life of the artist in general. Alongside these drawings will be a
video by Michael, exploring the internal workings of domestic
architecture as a metaphor for sexual machinations.
The
two artists converge in their complex explorations of the position of
the artist. Fredrickson's photos appear both live and staged, calling
into question the artist's role. Michael, by inserting himself into the
Sylvia Plath story, likens himself both to the tortured artist and to
the cacophony of voices that overshadow the artist's work.
Benjamin
Fredrickson lives and works in Minneapolis. His work has been featured
in BUTT, Self-Portrait, and various publications. Lucas Michael lives
and works in Los Angeles. He recently had a solo show at the Silverman
Gallery in San Francisco and has shown consistently in New York and LA
since 1995.
